Coffee is woven into life around Arusha, and a village coffee tour is one of the most enjoyable - and affordable - things to do between safaris. Most are run by farming families or community co-operatives, so your visit supports the growers directly.
Farm to cup
You start among the coffee bushes, often shaded by banana trees, picking the ripe red cherries by hand. Then you follow the whole process the traditional way: pulping the beans, drying them, roasting over an open fire, and pounding them in a wooden mortar while everyone sings. Finally you brew and taste a cup you made yourself - it is hard to go back to instant after that.
What to expect
Tours run about half a day and are gentle and family-friendly. They pair beautifully with a village walk, a waterfall, or a Chagga or Maasai cultural visit.
Several coffee farms sit within easy reach of the hillside. Ask reception and we will point you to a genuine, community-run tour and arrange the transport.
