Elephants among the baobabs.
Tarangire has more elephants per square kilometre than any other national park in Tanzania - and 550 species of birds to match.
Where the river draws the herds.
Tarangire National Park lies 120 km south-west of Arusha and covers 2,600 km². It's especially known for its 550 registered bird species and for having more elephants per square kilometre than any other national park in the country.
The park takes its name from the Tarangire River that flows through it - in the dry season it becomes a refuge for wildlife, and elephants in particular gather along its banks. Alongside them you'll find hartebeests, wildebeests, giraffes, gazelles and zebras, as well as lions, leopards and African wild dogs.
Getting there
Tarangire makes an ideal day trip from Arusha, and many visitors add an overnight stay at one of the lodges or camps inside the park.
