Where the great migration still runs.
The Serengeti is the only place in Africa where vast land-animal migration still takes place - endless plains, countless herds, and all of the big five.
Endless plains, countless herds.
Serengeti National Park is located 382 km from Arusha and covers 14,763 km². It's known for its huge herds of wildebeest, gazelles and zebras - and their predators - moving across the plains in the only vast land-animal migration left in Africa.
The number of animals is almost beyond counting. Among the estimated numbers you'll find:
- 1,200,000 wildebeest & 500,000 gazelles
- 200,000 zebras & 100,000 giraffes
- 4,000 lions, 1,000 leopards & 600 cheetahs
- 1,400 elephants, 30,000 wild dogs & 7,500 hyenas
- Some 500 bird species
You'll find all of the big five here - elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino - and seeing them roam freely in their own habitat is something you'll never forget.
Getting there
The most common way to visit is a drive-in with one of the tour companies operating from Arusha - around six hours by car, often with an overnight stay at one of the wildlife sites along the way. You can also fly from Arusha to one of the airstrips inside the park.
