There is no single "best" month - it depends on whether your priority is easy game viewing, the Great Migration, green landscapes or lower prices. Northern Tanzania has two dry spells and two rainy ones.
Dry season (June to October)
This is peak safari time. Grass is short, water is scarce so animals gather at rivers and waterholes, and the famous Mara River crossings usually happen between July and September. Skies are clear and days warm; it is also the busiest and priciest window, so book early.
Green season (November to May)
Short rains fall in November and December, then January and February are drier again - the calving season, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, drawing predators. The long rains (March to May) are the low season: lush, dramatic and quiet, with the best prices, though a few remote camps close.
For climbing Kilimanjaro or Meru
The clearest, safest windows for the mountains mirror the dry spells - January to February and June to October.
