Not everything worth doing near Arusha involves a long drive and a game vehicle. Lake Duluti is a small crater lake near Tengeru, just east of the city and only a short hop from the Moshono hillside - a protected forest reserve wrapped around still, green water.
On the water
The classic outing is a guided canoe across the glassy surface, gliding past reflections of the forest while the guide points out monitor lizards basking on half-submerged branches and kingfishers working the shallows.
Around the rim
A flat, shaded nature trail loops the lake in about an hour and a half - easy walking, thick with birdsong. Duluti is a birdwatcher's lake, with well over a hundred recorded species from fish eagles and herons to tiny, jewel-coloured kingfishers. Vervet and colobus monkeys move through the canopy overhead.
Why we love it
It is calm, green and refreshingly uncrowded - a nature reserve rather than a big-game park, which makes it perfect for a first, gentle morning in Tanzania, a rest day between safaris, or an outing with children. Pair it with the nearby Tengeru market or a coffee farm on the slopes.
From the hotel it is roughly fifteen minutes; canoes and guides wait at the gate and the fees are modest. Ask reception to set it up the night before.
